Cook/Baker or 1 Cook & 1 Baker
Assisted living community in SE is looking for either a baker and a cook, or a combined position for someone with both skills. One cooking shift would be 12 hours, but it’s nothing like line cooking – just a steady pace throughout the shift. Hours will range from 6 AM to 6PM, with the long shift going 6-6. Knowledge of dietary restrictions, like gluten-free and vegetarian, as well as special diets, like mechanical soft, and puree, would be a big plus. You do need experience with volume cooking and scaling.
One other thing that is different from line cooking is that the kitchen is not insulated from the guests. We cook for the people who live here, the people who pay our wages, and we have to interact with them, and care about their well-being. If you need to swear and complain while cooking, this would be a bad fit, because the residents will hear all of it, they will say something, and then you will lose your job. It’s not stressful in the same way working on a line is stressful, but it is stressful at times nonetheless, and you have to be able to keep your cool.
It’s a chill, positive environment, and a rewarding job that makes a difference, with a great team in the kitchen. I can teach you about special diets and timelines, but I can’t teach a good attitude or ability to work well with others.
