Job Description

Do words like “organic produce” and “bicycle delivery” excite you? We’re a Portland company that makes and delivers organic soups by bicycle. We make over 60 soup recipes over the course of the year. Each week we cook and package four different soups (meaty, vegetarian, vegan) as well as a deli salad, green salad, and fresh juice and deliver them to homes and offices by bicycle. So far we’ve done over 130,000 bicycle deliveries in just six years.

The chef position has two parts:
1) Creating amazing soups
2) Kitchen management

The person we hire must excel in both.

Creating Amazing Soups:
We aim to create Portland’s best, from-scratch soups. Our ideal candidate has a passion for soups, would love to make soups week in and week out, and enjoys creating both traditional, as well as exotic flavors.

Kitchen Management:
Our Chef leads a five-person kitchen crew. We do not have a traditional kitchen culture and are not looking for a traditional chef. We have a culture of inclusivity, respect and open communication at all times. The kitchen atmosphere is friendly, fun, and stress-free. We have fun while we are at work, don’t take ourselves too seriously, and are happy to wrap up the day and move on to the other things in our lives that we enjoy. A willingness to jump in wherever needed is a must. Our Chef works as a team-player on all levels with the soup crew and owner – spending most of the time cooking but also helping with inventory, ordering, shopping, cleaning, dishes and all other kitchen projects as needed.

Responsibilities:
Cooking all stocks and soups
Managing our soup kitchen and five-person soup crew
Managing inventory, ordering all ingredients and kitchen supplies
Ensuring cost-of-goods-sold is at the appropriate levels
Creating 1-2 new soup recipes every month
Shopping for weekly ingredients and kitchen supplies
Assisting with kitchen subtenant management

Requirements:
Passion for soups
Strong knowledge of local/seasonal cooking
Impeccable cleanliness
Experience determining order quantities and placing orders with vendors
Experience managing food costs through intelligent sourcing
Excitement to work with a small, local business
Ability to lift 50 lbs
Experience cooking in large batches. We’re currently cooking nearly 700 gallons of soup weekly.

Bonus Points:
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel

Hours and Benefits:
This is a daytime production kitchen environment.
Approximate hours:
Sunday: 8am-4pm
Monday: 8am-5pm
Tuesday: 8am-3pm
Friday: 10am-1pm

Salaried position: 25+ hours/week at 29k annual salary
